Short-term gains (assets held < 1 year) are taxed as ordinary income (10–37%). Long-term gains (≥ 1 year) are taxed at preferential rates of 0%, 15%, or 20% for US federal taxes.

Capital Gain = Sale Price − Purchase Price. Tax = Capital Gain × Tax Rate. Net Profit = Capital Gain − Tax.

For US federal taxes in 2024: 0% for incomes up to $47,025 (single) or $94,050 (married), 15% up to $518,900 (single), and 20% above that. State taxes may apply additionally.
