In the Korean system, a baby is considered 1 year old at birth. Everyone then gains one year on January 1st, regardless of their actual birthday. So someone born in December can be 2 Korean years old just one month later.
Korean age counts the time in the womb (approximately) and resets at the new year. Western (international) age counts full years elapsed since birth.
South Korea officially switched to the international age system in June 2023 for legal and administrative purposes, but Korean age is still commonly used in everyday conversation.
